Zigfred Diaz

Blue Ocean Strategy is a corporate strategy that aims to tap unclaimed markets making competition irrelevant. The strategy is embodied in the book entitled “Blue Ocean Strategy” by Professors W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne and Published by Harvard Business School Press. The authors claim that the Blue Ocean Strategy is a result of several years of study of strategic moves by over 30 industries in a span of 100 years.

In the book, “Blue Ocean” refers to an untapped market, a market wherein there is only little or no competition at all enabling anyone to claim the market for his own since it is not yet too crowded. In contrast, “Red Ocean” refers to a market where competition is very high. The market is considered as very crowded already since almost everybody is producing the same type of service and the same kind of goods.

The Blue Ocean strategy is simply to innovate something; something that makes people give a higher value for a certain product or service. Since doing this would require additional cost, the cost that is incurred by the value added is reduced by eliminating product or service features that the market does not really care about.

A classic example of how the Blue Ocean Strategy was used here in the Philippines is the strategic moves of the Gokongwei group. As we all know, the Gokongwei group owns Mobile phone company, Sun Cellular and airline Cebu Pacific among other companies.

Since the market for mobile phones has already been saturated by both Smart and Globe, what Sun Cellular did is to create a “new market” by adding value to products already found in existing markets. As a result of this “added” value, (By making sun to sun calls free) a new untapped market was opened. It could be said that Sun Cellular is not competing directly with Globe and Smart but rather they have raised awareness among the people to buy into this “new market.“ As a result, most people now have two cellular phones or two sim cards in a dual sim phone. In this way Sun Cellular is not “out-performing” Smart and Globe but rather they have created a new market, making competition irrelevant.

In the airline industry, Cebu Pacific has managed to apply the Blue Ocean Strategy by adding “value” to what people really want, which is to “fly.” People don’t care about a newspaper, a hot meal, lounges or a fancily dressed flight stewardess. What people care about is that they can “fly.” In order to do this airline fares must go down since this is what people care about. This in a sense allowed Cebu Pacific to tap into the “untapped” market. The existing market is referred to as “customers who can only afford to fly.” The untapped market is “every can fly.” This is embodied in Cebu Pacfic’s advertisement “Now every JUAN can fly” (A play on the words “every juan” and “everyone”) Cebu Pacific has managed to slash down fares by reducing cost on service features that most people do not really care about.

In the area of Bar review, a new player in the bar review industry has effectively applied this strategy. Jurists Bar Review center, a three year old bar review center has decided to expand its operations in the Visayas and Mindanao area by strategically placing a new review center in Southwestern University Cebu City.

Instead of being just another bar review center wherein bar reviewees enroll and sit down to listen to long lecture hours for the next 6 months, Jurists Bar review center has created a blue ocean by giving added value services to traditional bar review approaches. Traditional bar review is often likened to reading a book about running a marathon but never actually practicing to run a marathon. In contrast Jurists Bar Review helps the students not only read about how to run a marathon but rather to actually run the marathon by simulating bar exams conditions through six (6) mock bar exams. After each exams, reviewees are assigned a coach that will point out to them the strength and weakness of how they present their answers.

Jurists Bar Review center believes that each law student already has a substantial knowledge of the law, considering that they undertook 4 rigorous years of law school. The cause for failure in majority of the bar examinees is not the lack of knowledge in the law but rather in the way the answer is being presented by the examinees. Mock bar exams and one on one coaching is designed to help the reviewee improve the way his/her answer is presented.

Aside from the mock bar exams and one on one coaching, Jurists offers other value added services. Review schedules are not scheduled daily or for unreasonable length of hours, wearing out the bar reviewee and further dampening his appetite to study. Instead, the review schedules are only on Saturdays and Sundays. Further, unlike in some bar review centers where subjects will vary depending on the availability of the reviewer, in Jurists a certain subject has to be finished first before jumping to another subject. (For example all of Remedial law will be finished first before jumping to Civil or Criminal) This enables the reviewee to have a focus as to which subject he should study during weekdays. When he comes for review during the weekend, what he will be hearing will supplement what he has already read. This kind of setup also helps create a blue ocean as it captures the untapped market of bar examinees who can only review during the weekends as they are working during weekdays.

The administration thoroughly screens the bar reviewer who will be teaching the subject. Reviewers are not mainly drafted on the basis of his or her credentials but rather a reviewer’s track record of being a good speaker and his or her passion for teaching is thoroughly considered. Screening is also aided by the reviewees themselves as evaluation forms are passed out after every lecture. If a certain reviewer gets mostly negative feedbacks from reviewees, it is certain that the administration will act on the matter.

When I attended Jurists Bar Review, I did not realize that they were serious with their compelling tagline that is that “Jurists cares.” At first I thought that this was just a cliché just like what some companies do. But when I began to experience the care that the bar review center had for its reviewees I began to believe that they practiced what they preached and ever since that time I had become an “evangelist” for Jurists Bar Review. Other things that Jurists offered beyond the traditional bar review is conducting a “care givers” seminar, wherein the loved ones of bar exam reviewees are briefed for several hours to help them understand the difficult process that a bar reviewee is going through. Reviewees are grateful that this seminar is given because after their loved ones have attended it, they become more considerate, understanding and supportive to the bar examinee. Jurists Bar Review is also perhaps the only bar review center that has a “tent” every Sunday of the bar exams. Most of the Jurists administration is there to help “cheer” and “comfort” the candidate before and after the grueling bar examinations.

A Grand opening and closing party also helps liven the atmosphere and helps promote camaraderie among the reviewees. There are no preferred seats wherein the” host” schools get all of the front seats or those belonging to the “host” school gets preferred materials. Instead all reviewees get a chance to sit where they want to and any materials that could possibly help a reviewee is freely given to all.

Although the price is a little bit higher than other bar review centers in Cebu, Jurists Bar Review still manages to help bring down costs for each individual bar reviewee. Spending 6 months in Manila is far more costly if a reviewee goes there to enroll in the Jurists Bar Review Center in Manila. By bringing the “Jurists experience” to bar reviewees in the Visayas and Mindanao areas, Jurists helps lower the cost of a quality and unique bar exam experience for each individual bar examinee.

With a proactive administration, a compelling tagline and by pioneering value innovation in bar exam review, Jurists Bar Review is sure to change the landscape of Bar exam review in the years to come.

Review Classes for Jurists Bar Review Center – Cebu will start on the first April 4, 2009. In this regard, Jurists was the first bar review center to conduct a coaching program with mock bar examinations in the Philippines. Since then others have followed the trail blazed by Jurists but Jurists continues to remain at the forefront in the field of bar exam coaching. The Jurists program is sui generis and offers unique and special advantages and benefits not found in other programs.

Our coaching system features the administration of a series of 6 mock-bar examinations specially crafted by the Jurists coaching staff in consultation with the bar reviewers. After each mock bar, the coach checks the booklets and afterwards sits down with the reviewee in a one-on-one coaching session wherein the coach identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the bar reviewee and discusses the answers with the reviewee. The reviewee also receives a written feedback from the coach for his or her reference and file. The reviewee is also trained to use proven test-taking strategies and tactics specially developed by Jurists.

The performance of the reviewee is monitored by the coaching staff and weaknesses and faults are identified and then excised. The reviewee will note with satisfaction the marked improvement in the way he or she performs in the mock bar exams as the coaching program progresses. Jurists believes that each reviewee has his or her unique strong and weak points which must be addressed individually and not just in a group lecture or seminar. Reviewees are exhorted to undergo the full coaching protocol in order to gain the maximum benefits from the Jurists program.

At the conclusion of the coaching program, the reviewee has been thoroughly immersed in the Jurists Method of analyzing and answering bar questions such that its application becomes second nature or almost intuitive. This cannot be achieved in a program where there is only one or a few mock bar examinations and where there is only an omnibus or group lecture on how to answer the bar exam.

We have a dedicated and well-trained corps of coaches which has enabled us to effectively implement our unique program. Our coaches have themselves undergone an intensive clinic where they are taught the Jurists Method of training and coaching. Our coaches are concurrent law professors or those experienced in teaching the law. Jurists believes that a law professor will prove to be the best bar exam coach, as he or she can check and evaluate the mock-bar examinations from the unique perspective of a teacher experienced in checking and evaluating thousands of law school examinations

About Jurists Bar Review

Jurists Bar Review Center was born out of the dream of Professors Gafar E. Lutian and Manuel R. Riguera to found a bar review center that would offer not only bar-review lectures but more importantly establish a system of coaching and performance-monitoring that would better prepare the reviewees for the bar examinations. In late 2004, after a series of extensive brain-storming sessions, in which Professors Riguera and Lutian were joined by their respective spouses Attys. Hazel and Gina, the core group designed a review and training regimen that was quite unique in that it was the first and so far only bar review program that involved individualized coaching, mock-bar examinations, and performance monitoring. In 28 January 2005, Jurists Review Center, Inc. was incorporated with Professor Manuel R. Riguera as the President and Atty. Hazel R. Riguera as the Chief Financial Officer.

2005 was Jurists’ initial bar review season, and 82 reviewees enrolled for the program. When the bar results came out in March 2006, Jurists obtained an overall passing percentage of 41.38% as against the national passing percentage of 27.20%. For those Jurists reviewees who faithfully followed and adhered to the Jurists training protocol of mock-bar examinations and attendance in one-on-one coaching sessions, the passing percentage was an astounding 85%. And Gladys Gervacio, a Jurists Reviewee who faithfully followed the Jurists protocol, copped 6th place in the bar examinations and scored a perfect 100% in Labor Law and Legal Ethics, a feat unparalled in the annals of the bar examinations.

Jurists’ impressive results caught the attention of the academe, the law studentry, and even the national media. Ms. Mary Ann Ll. Reyes, in her widely-read column “Hidden Agenda” in the Philippine Star, said: “For a bar review center set up only last year, the Jurists Bar Review Center in Las Pinas is gaining quite a reputation.” (Philippine Star, 17 May 2006). Ms. Reyes wrote that Ms. Gervacio’s “remarkable performance she attributes largely to the preparation she received from the Jurists Bar Review Center … with its unique bar review program that features coaching with multi mock bar exams.” (Philippine Star, 14 May 2006).

In the 2006 Bar Review season, the number of enrollees increased to 108. The 2006 season was also notable for the introduction of an English for Bar Reviewees program and the implementation of various refinements to the coaching program.

Out of the 78 Jurists candidates who took the 2006 Bar, 31 emerged triumphant for a pass rate of 40% as against the national pass rate of 30%. The pass rate for those who followed the protocol continued to astound at a remarkable 80%.

Enrollment increased to 154 for the 2007 Bar Review season. The 2007 Bar Examination was an especially difficult one featuring “unusually strict corrections” in the words of the chairman, Supreme Court Justice Adolf Azcuna. Only 1,289 out of 5,626 examinees made the grade for a low 22.91% national pass rate. Despite this, Jurists bar candidates posted an above-par result with 34 out of 91 candidates making it for a 37.36% passing percentage. For the candidates who followed faithfully the Jurists training protocol, they still continued to outperform the rest of the pack with a remarkable 70% pass rate.

During the 2008 Bar Review season, Jurists moved to a new venue at the Philippine Christian University in Taft Avenue. Word continued to spread among the law studentry of the marvelous results posted by Jurists and the number of enrollees rocketed to 374. The coaching staff was thus increased to 12 coaches and the coaching program further fine-tuned in order to cope with the upsurge in the number of reviewees.

The 2008 season also saw the addition of a pre-week review and the expansion of Jurists to the Visayas. Let us give you 10 reasons, why you should choose to enroll at any Jurists Bar Review Center:

1.) Six full mock bar exams

Jurists is only one of the few law review centers in the country that conducts mock bar exams. This helps the examinee prepare for the pressure that will beset him in the actual bar exams.

2.) Individualized coaching

Jurists is probably the only review center that does this. After the bar exams have been checked, each reviewee will be coached as to how he should have answered the exam. Mistakes will be pointed out and it will be determined whether or not the reviewee has applied the answering methods taught be Jurists.

3.) Emphasis on presentation of answers

At Jurists, “how to present your answers in the bar exams” is a major subject. Lecturers constantly berate reviewees with regards to this matter. Special lecture session is also conducted regarding this matter. Jurists believes that how you answer is as relevant as what you answer. 50 % of the bar is won through the way you answer.

4.) Reasonable lecture hours and no overlapping of subjects

Unlike other review centers where they ask you to review for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, thereby reducing your study time or worst, reviewees choose not to attend lectures anymore, at Jurists lecture times are only on Saturday and Sunday whole day. Lectures are also arranged by subjects. You could pattern your study based on the schedule.

5.) The best selection of Lecturers

At Jurists, reviewees are asked to fill out an evaluation form after every lecture. The form is then submitted to the Jurists administration, which in turn will see if the Lecturer is really effective. Evaluating the lecturer through the evaluation form is not a mere formality; the administration always makes sure that the lecturers are informed of their performance during the review.

6.) Help desk

The Jurists administration has assigned a person to assist reviewees during lecture time. A person always mans the help desk from the moment the lectures starts until it finishes. Reviewees are always assured that somebody will attend to their needs while the lecture is going on.

7.) Pro-active administration

Behind a successful company is always a hard working management team. The Jurists administration works hard to ensure that reviewees really get what they paid for. The Jurists administration is almost always there every lecture to ensure that everything is all right and that the reviewees are comfortable. They stick around and talk to reviewees during break times and just try to make reviewees feel right at home.

8.) Grand party

This is probably the only review center that tries to boost reviewees morale by throwing a closing party.

9.) Best value for money

While it is true that we are the most expensive review center in Cebu and perhaps the entire Visayas and Mindanao area, you can be sure that you are getting your money’s worth. But take note the difference between our price and our nearest competitor is only P 3,000+. So why sacrifice P 3,000 when you can get personalized coaching and mock bar exams. The individualized coaching sessions alone are worth more than what a reviewee is paying. Also, why go to Manila and spend somewhere from P 150,000 to P 250,000 for six months just to enroll in a review center? You could save a lot by going to Manila one month before the bar exam instead.

10.) Jurists cares

If there is one word that summarizes why I love Jurists is that Jurists cares. The phrase “We care” is not just a cliché at Jurists. It’s a way of doing things. Jurists cares that the reviewee needs the support of their parents, that’s why they hold a “care givers meeting.” Jurists cares that a reviewee might be involved romantically with another reviewee and might disrupt his or her preparation for the bar that’s why they hold “counseling sessions” to resolve this problem. Jurists really does care.

How to get to Jurists Bar Cebu

Jurists Bar Review Center is located at Southwestern University (SWU) School of law.
